Discourse Community

I was involved in a discourse community at work. I was a member of the student worker staff at Cibola High School. During the school year I would work at the front office as a receptionist. Our goals were to provide the best service to parents and students. The three members I worked with were my co-workers, my bosses, and the customers which were students and parents. When calls were made to the school, I had to at the best of my ability answer each call within two rings. Then I needed to be able to help them and give them information they needed or transfer them to someone who can help them. Our form of communication was always the phone. If anything was needed, it was a phone call away whether it was a caller or a staff member. Each day after our session was over, we gather to talk about what things we need to improve on and what things we are doing great at. Our daily genre was the phone, the computer, and paperwork. Most of the time, it was just the phone that was important, but there were days where we needed to file papers or put information into the computer.

"Be somebody who makes someone feel like a somebody.."
